The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) congratulates the electricity employees and engineers of Haryana on the successful conclusion of their 48-hour statewide strike. Under the banner of the Haryana Electricity Employees and Engineers Joint Struggle Front, more than 40,000 workers and engineers brought the State’s power system to a standstill and forced the Government of Haryana to agree to issue a policy direction under Section 108 of the Electricity Act, 2003 against the parallel distribution licence granted to Eleven Power Private Limited for Gurugram and Nuh. The Hon’ble Chief Minister has announced this decision publicly and made it clear that parallel licence will not be allowed in Haryana. The strike has been called off in the light of these assurances.
This is a significant victory against the attempt to open the profitable areas of public electricity distribution to private profiteering. The employees and engineers stood firm. Farmers’ organisations, other trade unions and ordinary consumers stood with them even while facing prolonged power and water cuts. Their unity has shown that the working people will not allow public utilities to be weakened for the benefit of private companies.
CITU calls upon all its affiliated unions, federations and committees, and all workers in general, in every State, in every industry, on every floor and in every factory to organise victory celebrations, processions and meetings in support of the Haryana electricity employees and engineers. This victory belongs to the entire working class. It must be celebrated and carried forward as a message that united struggle can defeat privatisation of public services.
Long live the unity of the working class!
Defend public electricity!
